Morocco is not close to the war in Ukraine, but it is facing the negative impact of the war, as a large part of its wheat imports have so far come from Russia and Ukraine, the Hungarian foreign minister said on Monday in Budapest.
In a joint press conference with Morocco’s Minister of Higher Education and Innovation, Abdellatif Miraoui, Péter Szijjártó stressed that this is further proof that the war is causing serious problems all over the world.
“Morocco and Hungary have an interest in seeing peace come to Ukraine as soon as possible, as the sooner peace comes, the more realistic are our chances of preventing serious global challenges,” he added.
The minister also referred to the challenge of illegal migration to Europe, pointing out that Morocco also has an important role to play in combating it.
In the last six or seven years, we have seen that the migration pressure on us is less when there is stability in North Africa. That is why we value the countries that practically form Europe’s line of defense with their stability in North Africa, and that is why we also value Morocco’s role,
the politician said. According to Péter Szijjártó, Hungary can also provide some support in this regard, as the Hungarian Embassy will be NATO’s liaison office in Morocco from 2023.
The foreign minister welcomed the fact that the Arab country normalized its relations with Israel in 2020 in the frameworks of the so-called Abraham Accords, which according to him has contributed significantly to strengthening global security and stability.
Finally, the minister also referred to the continuous development of bilateral economic cooperation, stressing that the value of trade turnover reached a record high last year with a 16 percent increase to USD 300 million.
Péter Szijjártó and Abdellatif Miraoui also signed an agreement on increasing the number of scholarship places for Moroccan students at Hungarian universities from 150 to 165 per year between 2023 and 2025.
