Ferencváros Finishes Europa League Group Round with One-goal Defeat

Ferencváros, who finished in first place in the group with 10 points – the best ever group finish of Hungary – will not be involved in the February draw for the last 16 on Monday and will only face one of the eight qualifiers in March. The final will take place on 31 May at the Puskás Arena in Budapest.

The Thursday match was decided by a goal in the seventh minute from Trabzonspor’s Greek striker Anastasios Bakasetas. Despite their victory, Turkish champion Trabzonspor remained third in the four-team group and moved into the Conference League as second-placed Monaco beat Crvena zvezda in the other group match.

Commenting on the match, Ferencváros’ head coach Stanislav Cherchesov said that

they had played against a very good rival and would have liked to have won, but the opponents did not let them.

He added that they would analyse this meeting like all the others, because without it they would not be able to improve.

“We finished first in the group, which means the first stage of the Europa League is over and the club will play in a European football cup again in the spring after 47 years. Why should I be angry?” said the Hungarian head coach.
