It Is High Time to Re-evaluate Sanctions, Viktor Orbán Says

Viktor Orbán spoke about Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen Area and the need to re-evaluate the EU’s sanctions against Russia.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán attended the EU-Western Balkans summit in Tirana on Tuesday. On arrival, he spoke briefly to journalists. The prime minister said that it is rather unfair that Bulgaria has not been accepted yet as a member of the Schengen Area.

According to the European Council’s website, the integration of the Western Balkans with the EU internal market, the modernization of the region’s payment systems in line with the EU standards, security and defense issues, illegal migration, and the war in Ukraine are all on the agenda. The leaders signed a declaration on lower roaming costs.

Commenting on a statement by French President Emmanuel Macron the day before, Orbán wrote on Twitter that

the cost of the war is not the same on both sides of the Atlantic.”

“If we want the European industry to survive, we must address the European energy crisis swiftly. It is high time to re-evaluate sanctions,” he stressed.
