MEP Hidvéghi Speaks out Against the Istanbul Convention

Balázs Hidvéghi, MEP of the governing Fidesz party, accused the European Parliament of ideological pressure and violation of national competencies in the debate on the Istanbul Convention.

The European Parliament has adopted a report demanding the European Union to ratify the Istanbul Convention. “The text, adopted by 469 in favor, 104 against, and 55 abstentions, says the Istanbul Convention remains the international standard and a key tool in eradicating gender-based violence, including domestic violence, according to the European Parliament’s press release on Wednesday. MEPs strongly condemn attempts in some member states to revoke measures already taken in applying the Istanbul Convention and call on them to implement it fully, it adds.

Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli argued in favor of ratifying the Convention in Tuesday’s plenary debate. According to the official, the EU signed the convention six years ago, but the situation of women has not improved and violence against women and domestic violence and discrimination against women remain widespread across Europe.

Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi stressed that violence against women must be tackled, but pointed out that the plenary debate is really about the political misuse of the issue of combating violence against women by the radical left.

“It is about imposing the concept of gender on the member states. Furthermore, they are pushing the absurd idea that being a man or a woman is a human choice, which is a biological fact,” he pointed out. The reality, Hidvéghi said, is that

the Istanbul Convention has failed spectacularly as an international agreement, with more than half a dozen EU member states refusing to ratify it precisely because of its radical ideological content”.

The MEP added that the European Parliament and other institutions are also unable to accept the sovereign decision of member states. “It is unbelievable that this time they want to impose the treaty on them by forcing the accession of the European Union as an organization over their heads. This is unacceptable! The EU cannot take decisions against the expressed will of its member states,” said Balázs Hidvéghi.
