Hungary sees the Organisation of Turkic States as a forum for peace in the war in Ukraine, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said at a summit of the organisation in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on Friday.
In his speech, he said that the biggest problem is that the voice of those who want peace in Europe is much quieter than those who want to exacerbate tensions. He said that Hungary’s goal was to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine and to start peace talks as soon as possible. According to Viktor Orbán, this was the only way to end the energy crisis.
The Hungarian Prime Minister expressed his special thanks to Turkey, a member state of the Organization of Turkic States, for its successful mediation efforts in averting the food crisis, among other things, stressing that such a crisis would trigger another wave of mass migration, which would directly affect Hungary.
Hungary has already stopped 250,000 illegal border crossings at its southern borders this year so far.
Viktor Orbán said he had arrived in Uzbekistan with a 60-member business delegation for bilateral talks with the Uzbek president and his government on business opportunities on Thursday. They came close to declaring that the Hungarian bank OTP could soon announce the purchase of a major Uzbek bank, and pharmaceutical announcements are expected on the start of investment in a manufacturing base to be set up there. In addition, agreements on water management, food and nuclear energy are also expected, he added.
The Hungarian PM also held talks with Uzbek President Savkat Mirziyoyev on closer economic, energy cooperation and cultural and educational ties. Viktor Orbán said that
as the energy crisis in the world will persist for a long time, Hungary is seeking to explore joint gas production opportunities with Uzbekistan.
The Prime Minister’s press chief also informed that Viktor Orbán had held bilateral talks with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov in Samarkand during the day.
