Prime Minister Viktor Orbán To Have Chief National Security Adviser

According to the Hungarian tabloid Blikk, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will soon have a chief national security adviser, as per an amendment to the law proposed on February 26.

A proposal presented by Antal Rogán, the minister in charge of the Prime Minister’s Cabinet, the future chief national security adviser will be responsible for advising the Prime Minister and the government on various aspects of national security, including civil national security, intelligence activities, law enforcement, crime prevention, criminal justice, public security, and defense issues.

The adviser will also play a role in preparing decisions related to these matters.

The proposed amendment to the Government Administration Act includes the addition of the Prime Minister’s Chief National Security Adviser to the list of key positions, alongside the Prime Minister, the Minister, the Prime Minister’s Political Director, and the State Secretary. The salary of the Chief National Security Adviser, similar to that of the Prime Minister’s Political Director, Balázs Orbán, will be determined by the Prime Minister.

The specific duties and powers of the chief national security adviser will be outlined in a government decree.

The justification for this amendment is the growing complexity of security threats, necessitating closer coordination and safeguarding of the country’s security. Establishing this new role is seen as a proactive measure to address these challenges.

The adviser will have the authority to access classified information and will be entitled to a diplomatic passport.

To support the Chief National Security Adviser in their role, the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office will provide assistance. Additionally, the adviser will oversee the Office of the Chief National Security Adviser and the Secretariat of the Chief National Security Adviser, as well as the National Security Bureau within the Ministry.
