Viktor Orbán in Antalya: War in Ukraine Paralyzes European Politics

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán attended the Antalya Diplomatic Forum at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Prime Minister addressed the war conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing its paralyzing effect on European politics.

Mr. Orbán stressed the criticality of determining in whose favor time works, expressing his inclination to halt the war to prevent potential losses for Hungary. Defending his stance, he prioritized Hungarian interests and dismissed accusations of being pro-Russia, stating,

I must represent my country and its people, understanding what is in the best interests of Hungarians.”

He highlighted the significance of Hungarian lives (the western region of Ukraine is the home of a big Hungarian minority) in the conflict, underscoring Hungary’s wholehearted support for peace.

Regarding Hungary’s future in the European Union, Viktor Orbán affirmed Hungary’s European identity but criticized the current progressive, liberal ideology prevalent in the EU. He noted the importance of the conservative camp gaining majority representation within the EU. Additionally, the Prime Minister discussed the country’s geopolitical stance, expressing support for Sweden’s potential NATO accession while asserting the need for Hungary to receive respect within the international community.

Mr. Orbán emphasized the necessity of rebuilding trust between Hungary and NATO allies, addressing accusations from Brussels regarding Hungary’s alleged violations of the rule of law.

The Prime Minister also mentioned his forthcoming meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump, expressing his respect and suggesting that Mr. Trump’s return to office would offer a better chance for peace in Ukraine.

Finally, Viktor Orbán outlined Hungary’s priorities for its upcoming EU Presidency, emphasizing enlargement in the Balkans and prioritizing European competitiveness.
